Kids need your help now more than ever
There are kids throughout Whatcom county who are living in unsafe homes. These homes often become more stressful while we're all staying home and staying safe. With school online and many parents out of work, it can be hard for some kids to find any pockets of safety or stability.
That's why it is so important that we continue to provide a safe and stable environment for children who are entering foster care at Skookum House. With more people receiving the vaccine everyday, there is hope ahead, but we're not there yet. In order to see these kids safely to the pandemic finish line, we're looking for some special people to join our quaranteam. Maybe you?
Skookum Kids provides a safe place for kids entering into foster care, helping children to stabilize and buying critical time for the right foster home to be located for each child. Our doors have remained open to those who need this emergency shelter. We’re an “essential service,” which happens in-person and indoors, a rarity these days. So we're looking for volunteers who:
Take COVID-19 seriously and follow proper safety protocol to ensure the safety of others. We don't mess around with this stuff. Caring well for kids means taking the virus seriously. If you love to wash your hands, have a collection of masks, and enjoy wiping down toys with sanitizer, we have a job for you!
Young, healthy, and not a part of the high risk population. This work is up close and personal. It has to be, for now at least. If this isn’t you, that’s ok. We’d love to see you volunteer outside of a pandemic.
Willing to take moderate, reasonable risk to help children in need. We do our best to screen for symptoms and take precautions, but there is no way to do this perfectly. Sometimes we know very little about what a child's life has been like before they arrive in our care. Again, for now, this might not be for everybody.
Have a generous amount of time on your hands. This is your chance to get out of your house and do some good. Bonus, you don’t even have to change out of your sweatpants!
The best part about volunteering during this unique time, is that the fun hasn’t gone anywhere. Kids are still kids who love to play games, create art, and eat as many goldfish crackers as you can give them. You’d be caring for kids on one of the most important days of their life so far and making sure it is full of joy.
So for the third time we repeat: at the moment, this job isn't for everyone. But, if this sounds like you, visit skookumkids.org/volunteer to get involved.
