Children's Books on Black History, Race, and Diversity
February marks a time on our calendars where we can be especially reflective on the history of black lives in our community, country, and the world. It’s a month to reflect, but it’s also a month to celebrate. At Skookum Kids, it’s important to us that all cultures and matters of diversity are represented and supported—specifically black children. African Americans represent 12% of the general population, but 23% of children in foster care.
We know that this stems from a significantly greater systemic problem than can be solved in a single blog post attempt. However, one thing that seems to be making a big difference is starting conversations from a younger age. Raising children with an understanding of diversity and the history of race is one way to move the needle toward healing and fair representation. With that in mind, we’ve collected 10 of our favorite children's books that either discuss race or are written by black authors.
