Meet Shara: Volunteer Interview

Meet Shara Pagels, a Bellingham native with a deep-rooted connection to her community and a passion for making a difference. As a CPA, Shara spends much of her time immersed in spreadsheets and tax filings, but her heart also yearns for something beyond crunching numbers. That's where Skookum Kids comes in, “I was just looking for something to do in the community that's helpful in some way. It's just so fun because it's not a part of my normal life otherwise. I just dive in, and have fun doing everything.”

Shara started as a volunteer in 2017, working primarily at the Landing, our emergency shelter for children entering foster care for the first time. In 2023 she volunteered at Camp Skookum, our yearly summer camp for reunified families. “Being there to see kids back with their parents and seeing them just be a family, that was amazing to be a part of.”

One of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering for Shara is simply being a part of the overall mission to serve children. Whether it's hearing a child express gratitude for being in a safe place or watching them have fun in a welcoming environment, she finds it fulfilling to contribute. Shara explains,

"It's just knowing I can help accomplish the mission, even if it's in a small way,"

While volunteering with Skookum Kids can be incredibly rewarding, Shara acknowledges that there are challenges. Juggling different family dynamics or managing siblings can sometimes feel overwhelming. But she emphasizes that the effort is well worth it once you're there with the kids, enjoying moments of joy and connection. Through her work with Skookum, Shara has gained new insights into the foster care system and the challenges many families face. Although she recognizes the system's complexities and struggles, she remains committed to making a difference where she can, even if it's just for a weekend at the Landing.

When asked what her favorite part of being a Skookum volunteer is, Shara doesn’t hesitate: “It’s the kids,” she says with a smile. Whether she’s going for a walk, taking kids to the park, or showing them something new, like the beach for the first time, Shara loves getting kids outside and helping them simply enjoy being kids.

As she reflects on her time with Skookum Kids, Shara is filled with gratitude for the opportunity to be part of such a positive force in the community. “It’s a privilege to be a part of Skookum and to be with the kids and families,” she says, acknowledging the incredible work being done by the staff, volunteers, and families involved. Shara hopes that Skookum will continue to expand its reach and impact, providing even more support for children and families in need.

Through her time, dedication, and care, Shara Pagels exemplifies the heart of Skookum Kids—creating safe, loving spaces for children to thrive and building a stronger community in the process.
